Composite Resins

If you are self-conscious about your smile because of decayed, disfigured, or discolored teeth, you may be a good candidate for composite resins. A composite resin is a tooth-colored resin material that we use to restore teeth to an attractive, healthy state. We highly recommend composite resins as a healthier looking, stronger alternative to silver amalgam fillings. Silver amalgam has been a part of dentistry for over 150 years. Amalgam is being used less and less among dentists yearly and many experts feel that its use will eventually end altogether. Silver amalgam requires removal of tooth beyond the decay in order to allow it to lock mechanically into the tooth. Silver amalgam also expands over time producing stresses that may cause cracks or fractures in the tooth. By bonding to the teeth, composite resin greatly decreases the chance of breaking a tooth which is very common to teeth restored with amalgam. The newest generation of composites have also demonstrated better wear than silver fillings. Furthermore, over time, amalgam turns black and who wants to see that when you smile?

Composite Resin is also a material that is used when one needs cosmetic bonding on the front teeth. Dr. Goldstein is an experienced, meticulous artisan, able to blend composite shades and shapes to match the original teeth nearly perfectly. The composite resin is bonded to the tooth and actually serves to support the remaining tooth structure, helping to prevent breakage and providing insulation against temperature changes. The final result is a tooth or teeth that look exactly as if they never had any dental work done at all.
